Pharmacy and Specialist Needle exchanges

Needle exchange logoTo reduce the sharing of needles, syringes and other drug taking equipment there are a range of needle exchanges based at pharmacies across the city and a specialist needle exchange based in the Derby Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service.

What do the needle exchanges provide?

All needle exchanges will provide sterile injecting equipment and the safe disposal of used equipment. Pharmacies will provide a pack of injecting equipment depending on what type of drug is used. The packs include:

 Opiate user pack

  • 1x insulin needle
  • 1x swab
  • 1 cup including filter
  • 1 vitamin C

 Non-opiate user pack

  • 1x orange needle (1inch and 5/8)
  • 1x swab
  • 1x 2ml syringe
  • 1 cup including filter

 Steroid injector pack

  • 10x2ml barrels
  • 20 x green needles (1 ½ inch 21g)
  • 10 x blue needles (1 ¼ inch 23g)
  • 10 x swabs
  • 1 x 0.45 sharps bin

 

Specialist Needle Exchange

In Derby the specialist needle exchange is based at:

The specialist needle exchange provides sterile injecting equipment and also offers a range of information and advice about injecting practice including injecting performance enhancing drugs. One-to-one support and advice is provided which may include information around injecting techniques, overdose risks, testing for blood borne infections including Hepatitis B, C and HIV infections, Hepatitis A & B immunisations and referral to other services.
